Floods also flowed back up the Snake and Clearwater rivers to Kamiah. Missoula Flood slack-water deposits cover Lake Bonneville deposits in the Lewiston area. The Wisconsin glaciation extended from approximat to 11, years ago, between the Sangamonian Stage (known globally as the Eemian stage) and the current interglacial, the Holocene. The maximum ice extent occurred approximat–21, years ago during the last glacial maximum, also known as the Late Wisconsin in North America.

A clastic dike is a seam of sedimentary material that fills an open fracture in and cuts across sedimentary rock strata or layering in other rock types. Clastic dikes form rapidly by fluidized injection (mobilization of pressurized pore fluids) or passively by water, wind, and gravity (sediment swept into open cracks). Six late Cenozoic gravels mapped in the Lewiston basin are attributable to a Snake, Salmon, or Clearwater River origin on the basis of preliminary studies of cobble lithology. Pleistocene Episodes of Alluvial-Gravel Deposition, Southeastern Idaho Kenneth L. Pierce’ and William E. Scott’ ABSTRACT In southeastern Idaho, extensive gravel deposits occur on alluvial fans and along major streams. Gravel deposits of late Pleistocene age occur in each drainage; older gravel deposits form terraces or are buried by the younger gravels.
